The capital of Peru, Lima is also the largest city in the country. It was the seat of the Spanish rule for 300 years and , as a result, is filled with wonderful colonial buildings. Lima is also the largest transportation hub in Peru and most likely the point of entry for foreign travelers.

An airport serving the city

Lima is served by Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) , the main international and domestic airport in Peru. It is located about 11 km from Lima’s history center , to which it’s connected by bus or taxi. The airport is hub for the following airlines: LAN Peru, TACA Peru, Peruvian Airlines, Star Peru and LC Busre.

There are plenty of direct flights to/from South America (Buenos Aires, Bogota, Santiago de Chile, Sao Paulo), North America (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta, Houston, Toronto, Mexico City), as well as some flights from Europe (Amsterdam, Madrid). Plenty of domestic flights connect the capital to the rest of Peru.

Finding cheap flights to Lima

The peak travel season in Peru coincides with the dry weather, so expect the most foreigners to arrive here between May and October. However, since June to August are the most popular months for holidays in both Europe and North America, that’s when the majority of travelers will also book flights to Lima. So, in order to get cheap fare, try to plan your flight either at the beginning or at the end of the peak season. Avoid flying in July and August.

It’s best to book ahead of time (2 to 8 weeks before departure, but even earlier if you manage to catch a good deal) and avoid flying over the weekends. Flying mid-week typically ensures the cheapest fares.

You can check the connecting flights, too. It may be worth it to spend some hours in a large hub, such as London, Amsterdam, New York or Miami, if you can save money on your flights.
